“Some read the Bible to learn, and some read the Bible to hear from heaven.”  Andrew Murray

Andrew Murray, a South African missionary in the late 1800s into the early 1900s, is well known for his many devotional writings. Murray’s writings reflect his understanding that the Holy Scriptures connect us to the living God and are not just a set of rules or an account of history. In A Life of Obedience Murray explains through Scripture God is revealed to each of us so “that God’s people might be equipped to do His will as it is done in heaven, and to be restored to the perfect obedience upon which God’s heart is set.” From the Holy Spirit “the Word of the living God [is spoken] to us and into us if we are to know its full power.” Murray adds, “All Scripture will become the simple revelation of what God is going to do for you, in you and through you.”

People read the Scriptures in various ways and for a variety of reasons. Some search for truth, others seek ways to judge or defend a position; some read to acquire religious information, while others come to learn God’s way and hear His instruction. The Bible, the inspired word of God, is a gift from God for the people.

The Holy Scriptures reveal the character and holiness of God, record the history of God’s prophecies and their fulfillment, teach the way of repentance and redemption through Christ, establish the guidelines for righteous and holy living, and define hope as God’s promise of eternal life. Christ’s own words in John 5:39 say while the Scriptures bear witness about Him they do not give eternal life. These sacred writings still speak God’s prophecies, bringing God’s message and revealing His purpose century after century.

With precepts and promises, prophets and parables, God’s story of redemption and restoration enfolds us. Inside this ancient text, we discover God’s ultimate plan for humanity. Jesus Christ embodies God’s truth and love and hope for the world. Reading this holy and living book gives us a taste of eternity and the goodness of God. From In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth through The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all. Amen, the beginning to the end, God’s presence and power is Sovereign.

Through these sacred Scriptures, God whispers and sometimes shouts to us. Open the Bible! Encounter the living Christ! Practice Lectio Divina! Learn, listen, and love!
