Take It With You 01.30.2022

Today we begin a 5 week series on Being the Family of God, working and worshiping our way through several passages in the Book of Ephesians and in 1 Corinthians as we look at Commitment, Corpus (Unity), Conflict, Communication, and Communion.

It truly seems like the right word for the right time in this season for Snyder. The Church is alive in a world divided, divided to a degree that seems unique to my 47 years. The loss or reworking  of traditional institutions, systems, and processes right down to the very fabric of how we greet one another (or not) is a rug pulled out from under us all. So, do we come up swinging? Do we stay down, where it’s “safe”? Or do we embrace the opportunity for what it is – to help someone else get up and, thereby, “Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.”? (Eph5:1) After all, they – the watching, weary world – will know we are Christians by our love. And oh how God delights to show all people His great love through His beloved Family!!

Below is a song that has been written to accompany this series, and perhaps even this season as we do the hard work to call the next pastor of Snyder Memorial Baptist Church. The song represents the Family of God in both its worst and best moments as expressed in a conversation between someone not (yet) a part of God’s Family (light print) and those who are (bold print), namely the Church. As we learn this song together we invite you this morning to sing the lyrics in bold.

You don’t know my story and
Half the things I’ve done
You would never want me in the
Family of God

Come, O, come
Weary Child
You are LOVED in the
Family of God

It’s never been easy to
Love and then be loved
Trust is just too risky, oh
Family of God

Come, O, come
Weary Child
You are HELD in the
Family of God

Come, O, come
Weary Child
You are FOUND in the
Family of God

[We realize how hard it is sometimes.]

How’d we get here?
You can’t say that!
I’m not moving!
You’re not perfect!
You take that back!
I’m not sorry!
Here’s the door, “friend”!
What’s your hurry?!

Can’t you see we’re different?
Stop and look around.
Yes. God is love! Is that enough
To still an angry crowd?
To turn our words around?
To find the common ground?

It’s never been easy
When push has come to shove
And we’re no longer being the
Family of God

[Verse melody]

Spirit, we are pleading
Save and make us one
Again we’ll find our calling as the
Family of God

Come, O, come
Weary WORLD
You are FOUND in the
Family of God

Come, O, come
WATCHing WORLD
You are LOVED in the
Family of God the
Family of God in the
Family of God

[Verse melody]
Look, now from the Father:
Greatest love of all!
He calls us sons and daughters in the
Family of God
