Pastor’s Perspective 07-21-2020
If you’ve ever flown much into or out of some of the busier airports in our country, you may have gone into a holding pattern for a period of time while the pilot was waiting for clearance from air traffic control to land. Certain life events may force us into similar holding patterns in our individual lives. The current COVID-19 crisis has done this in many ways for our world, our country, our community, our families and our church. It can be very frustrating to feel stuck. Unable to move forward. And uncertain when we might be able to do so.
At the same time, this inconvenient pause has forced us to rethink how we do church and challenged us to spend time addressing things that will enable us to move forward even while in a holding pattern. I want you to know your staff has not been treading water these past few months. We are making significant progress installing a fiber optic backbone cable throughout our church building. This will substantially increase our connectivity throughout the building, enable children, youth and adult Sunday School classes to access online resources in their individual classrooms, and enhance our livestream projection capabilities.
We are pressing forward with our 2020 Vision with greater clarity and a sense of urgency. We just produced a six minute video that highlights where we are in the process, our current priorities, and the other phases that will follow. I strongly encourage you to watch this video if you haven’t seen it already. You can access it at https://youtu.be/OK7HQknXPnI. I will be sending out a letter with more details to all of our church members later this week.
Individual staff members are thinking outside the box, finding creative ways to keep our children, youth and adults connected to our church and their faith. Just last week, Karen, Giles and Todd created videos of all the opening sessions for a virtual Vacation Bible School next week. The youth have been meeting Monday and Wednesday evenings each week for movies and Bible study and have a beach trip planned this coming weekend.
We still have some major decisions to make in the coming weeks about the start-up of Wednesday night activities, the Singing Christmas Tree, and other special activities. We covet your prayers for wisdom. I am proud to be part of this team… and this church… even while we navigate during this holding pattern.
See you Sunday! ~ John
