A Pastor’s Perspective 10-26-2021

Last Saturday Becky and I were headed to Santee, SC to pick up one of our daughters for her to visit us for a few days. A short time into our journey, the “ETA” on our maps app increased our time by two hours. TWO HOURS! A burning 18 wheeler blocked the I-95 bridge near Santee.
Redirected, we decided to meet up in Sumter, SC. We found ourselves driving the back roads…along with everyone else trying to escape the gridlock. All of a sudden, we were driving parallel to a fenced-in area with a manicured dirt road around the perimeter. Finally, we saw a sign of warning: “DO NOT ENTER – AIR TO GROUND BOMBING”. Yep – Fort Sumter.
Becky commented about how our experience reminded her of what happens when we are tempted. First, like a map/traffic app, the Holy Spirit is going to always alert us to danger ahead. We are going to get a “do not enter”, “do not engage”, “turn around” or even “RUN!” notification. He’ll provide a detour…an escape route.
Paul teaches us in I Corinthians 10:13: No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.
Like our app warning, God will put people, signs, circumstances and even objects in between ourselves and sin; but we’ve got to rely on the Holy Spirit’s power to take notice and “flee”. Still, other temptations will come. We found a fence…and a sign telling us to stay away from an area that would cause us harm. I have to confess, part of me thought, “It’d be cool to see bombs hitting the ground and blowing up stuff.” Sin will be attractive. It will promise lasting reward, satisfaction and success. But as we all know from experience; those promises are hollow. It’s the narrow path that is lasting and brings eternal reward, pure satisfaction and Godly success.
We’re in this together. As 2 Peter 5:8-9 reminds us: Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of suffering.

Stay Alert!   Bruce
