Dance

Hip hop is a style of dance that allows the body to improv or move freely as the music leads.  This style of hip hop includes a complete workout of the entire body learning to move the body in a precision type fashion, as well as freestyle.  The moves are done in good taste as to represent how Christ as intended us to move our bodies.  The music is also clean with no inappropriate language or descriptions.
Younger children will begin to:  learn left to right exercises, understand the space in the room, and become aware of rhythm and beat.

Pre-clogging will be a time for the children to learn about beat and rhythm, allowing their body to display what they feel by clapping, stomping, and bending knees.  They will learn to tap toes, heels, and begin to shuffle.  They will also learn to rock step.  As they do these steps they will learn to move front, back, left, and right.  The children will also be involved in some square dance learning.  The music is traditional blue grass or secular children's music (no inappropriate language or descriptions).

Older clogging will do all the above, plus learn a variety of step changes (precision).  They will be able to put these style steps to music and execute on beat.  They will also learn a freestyle type dance, where their feet will be able to move freely without instruction.

Snyder Music Academy Music Therapy Services
Music Therapy is an established healthcare profession that uses music to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of individuals of all ages.  Music therapy improves the quality of life for persons who are well and meets the needs of children and adults with various disabilities or illnesses.  Music therapy interventions can be designed to:

  • promote wellness
  • manage stress
  • alleviate pain
  • express feelings
  • enhance memory
  • improve communication
  • promote physical rehabilitation

Music activities such as singing/vocalizing, movement, and instrument play are designed to be success oriented and enjoyable. For more information on music therapy services, go to www.musictherapy.org.

Music therapy services at Snyder Music Academy are provided by a Board Certified Music Therapist, who has completed at least an undergraduate degree in music therapy at an accredited school as well as a specialized 6 month internship in a specific field.

Upon registration for music therapy services, an individual assessment with the music therapist will be scheduled at a time agreed upon by the therapist and the caregiver.  During this time, the therapist will ask questions and have the client perform specific tasks so that individual needs and goals can be established.  He/she will suggest a proper placement in one of the following groups that will meet the client’s needs and schedule.

Classes offered in the spring 2009 semester are:  Drumming, Early Beginnings, and Music Therapy Group I.

Early Beginnings in Music Therapy (ages 3—pre-K)
45 minutes, once a week
For children with special needs, ages three to five. This small group music therapy class is an opportunity for children, with a caregiver present, to socialize within a structured music setting. Children learn sharing play, taking turns, listening and responding to others. It will also assist in the development of verbal communication, speech, and language skills.

Music Therapy Group I (grades K-5)
45 minutes, once a week
For elementary aged school children with special needs. The group will focus on basic social interactions and involves singing, dancing, playing instruments, and musical games and stories.  This music therapy session assists in the development of verbal communication, speech and language skills, sharing, taking turns, and listening and responding to others.

Drumming (Teens and Adults)
45 minutes, once a week
Everyone loves to make music with percussion instruments!  This group encourages self-expression, fine and gross motor skills, socialization, multi-sensory stimulation, and self-awareness.  We will explore many different kinds of percussion instruments, participate in drum circles, and play rhythm games.
